Geger Beach – Flying Under the Tourist Radar

Geger Beach is one of the Bali Bukit’s hidden gems. It is known and frequented mostly by locals, with the majority of the tourist crowd sticking to the better known and more famous Mengiat and Nusa Dua Beaches. Considering Geger Beach is actually an extension of Mengiat Beach, it is actually a wonder that it still manages to remain a secret at all.

Where is Geger Beach?

Finding this beach is rather simple, and if you have been to Nusa Dua at all, you will wonder how you didn’t know about it already. The access road runs down the side of the Mulia Resort, just before you wind up the hill past the resort itself. There is another access above the resort that will bring you in past the temple to the southern end. The first access is the best, however, and you will find a couple of Warungs at the end and deck chairs to rent. Follow this link for a google maps location.

What to expect at Geger Beach?

Geger Beach is a beautiful strip of pristine white sand. It is no wonder that the Mulia Resort chose this location to build beside. It is the ideal place to relax, away from the crowds of the large resorts that are nearly visible further along the beach. The Warungs here are “local price” and you will only pay the same as you would in Kuta. Even cheaper now that Kuta has jacked up the prices a bit more recently. No Nusa Dua expensive prices here!

This is the place that most of the locals, including me, choose to come and hang out. At sunset, even though you can’t actually see the sun, they flock down to Geger from all over. During the day though, you could have it to yourself. The sunchairs are all vacant, and you can enjoy swimming in some of the cleanest water in Bali for minimal cost!

In recent times, as of April 2024, more and more people are learning about Geger Beach. I’ve been there on “busy” days recently, and you will still be able to get a front row chair at the beach, and have no problems booking in a nice beachside massage from the lovely ladies in the massage hut.

So if you are heading out to Nusa Dua and want to see the beaches, relax and have a bit of quiet time, then move away from the crowd and check out Geger Beach. You won’t be disappointed!

Local tip: If you want a really great lunch, then take a stroll past the Mulia to the temple end of the beach. There, tucked in beside the Mulia, you will find the Nusa Dua Grill. You will find some of the best Steaks in Bali there, along with some other incredible cuisine!

Where to stay.

Mulia Resort – this is one of the largest resorts in Nusa Dua. The size will blow you away. It is also one of the most photographed, and the fact that it faces onto the beach each only makes it even better!

The St Regis Bali Resort – Just a little further down the beach, this resort has it’s own little private strip of Beach to itself. Although a little closer to the more crowded resorts of Nusa Dua beach, you will still have absolutely private beach front to yourself here!

The Mulia Resort Bali occupies the beach frontage at one end of Geger Beach. This is one of the largest resorts in Bali, and definitely Nusa Dua. It is also one of the most famous, especially with photographer. When you see the pool, you will know why!

What else is nearby?

Geger Beach is not the only great beach in the area. As already mentioned above, it is actually an extension of Mengiat Beach (also known as Bengiat Beach). This in itself is a wonderful beach, and has a couple of great hotels facing onto it, including the Grand Hyatt Bali.

Here are a few things you can do in Nusa Dua, and on the Bukit while you are in the area:

  • Head down to Mengiat Beach to check out another wonderful (and probably the best) Nusa Dua Beach.
  • Take a stroll along the wonderful walkway that stretches from Mengiat, all the way along the coastal front down into Tanjung Benoa.
  • Check out the twin islands of Nusa Dua. Walk around the larger of the two, Nusa Gede, and check out the incredible views of the coastline.
  • Visit the Nusa Dua Blow Hole on Nusa Gede Island.
  • Take a drive or ride out to Uluwatu, where you can visit many wonderful beaches such as Nunggalan Beach, Green Bowl Beach, or Suluban Beach.
  • Drop in at Nyang Nyang and have a look at the plane perched on the clifftops.
  • Stop by in Jimbaran, where you can feast on seafood on the beach.
  • Check out one of the amazing Bali sunsets that are even better from locations such as Karang Boma, Jaran Hill, or Tanjung Balangan.
  • Take a paddle out at Suluban Beach to check out some of the best surf in the world at Uluwatu.
  • Visit Uluwatu Temple and spend the day dodging those pesky monkeys!

The Bukit of Bali is a wonderful place to spend a holiday. There are so many hidden spots that even regular tourists don’t know about. It’s the perfect place to just go for a ride and explore!

How to get around

The best way to get around in Bali is by scooter. This is how I advise everyone to travel around and explore the island when they visit. The island is basically designed FOR scooters. Even the rice paddies are designed so that the workers can ride their scooters into the fields. This makes it great for visitors that want to get around easily.

To hire a scooter is simple. All you need is a current drivers license from home, and an international driver’s permit. Make sure to bring one with you to Bali. Check THIS article for more information.

If you are not comfortable riding a scooter, then the next best option is to hire a car and driver. This is an awesome alternative in Bali, and for a minimum spend each day, you can be ferried around in airconditioned comfort by a local. Create your own itinerary, and he will take you where you want to go. Simply click HERE for an easy way to hire a trusted car and driver/guide.

Summary

Geger Beach is an amazing strip of golden sand that still remains well and truly undiscovered by tourists. Being located in the middle of some of the biggest hotels in Bali, it won’t remain like that for long. Get along and enjoy it now, before the crowds arrive!
