Nunggalan Beach Shipwreck

Nunggalan Beach – Hidden Shipwreck Beach of Uluwatu

Nunggalan Beach can be found not too far from Uluwatu, and is easily accessed via the main road out to the Uluwatu Temple. Often mistaken for the nearby Nyang Nyang Beach, Nunggalan Beach is in its own right a beautiful and secluded strip of sand in an otherwise popular beach area. Known to most as the “shipwreck beach”, it has grown rapidly in popularity in recent years.

How to Get to Nunggalan Beach?

Getting to Nunggalan Beach is easy. Take the road out to Uluwatu and continue along the Bukit toward Uluwatu Temple. Keep an eye open for the sign beside the road for Nunggalan Beach which is sitting at the turnoff. If you reach a sign for Nyang Nyang Beach, then you have gone too far. Alternatively, follow this link for Google Maps Coordinates.

What to expect at Nunggalan Beach?

From the carpark, you will have a good 20 to 30 minute walk down to the beach. This is because the beach is at the bottom of the cliff you are currently standing on. Unlike a lot of the other beaches in the area, though, there is not 300 stairs awaiting you. Instead, it is a track down through the bush made of dirt, roots and rock. Wear decent shoes if you can, although flip flops will get you by. There are also several Warungs along the way with great views, so don’t feel guilty about stopping for a rest, especially on the way back up!

Nunggalan Beach itself is a beautiful strip of gorgeous white sand that seems to stretch forever in both directions. The few Warungs that are located along the beach head are nicely placed amongst the trees to give customers shade from the Bali Sun, and provide a really nice atmosphere.

The big attraction for most visitors to Nunggalan Beach is the shipwreck. Toward the southern end of the beach is the stern part of an old wooden ship that has been a feature of this beach for many years. The bow section has recently disappeared, but what is left has become very popular with visitors and Instagrammers. Colorfully graffitied by local artists, it makes for interesting photos, and something to show your friends back home.

So, enjoy your day at Nunggalan Beach, and don’t forget to give yourself time to haul your way back up the cliff to the carpark before it gets dark!
