On the island of Gili Trawangan you can find a locally funded Turtle Conservation and Hatchery area. These exist on each of the Gili islands, however the one on Gili T is the largest.
Local islanders assist by rescuing the eggs before they hatch and are taken by predators, and deliver them to the hatchery where they are placed back in the sand in the cordoned off “hatching area”. Once they hatch, the baby turtles are placed into large tanks of sea water where they are cared for and fed until they are old enough and strong enough to be released into the ocean.
Anyone who has been to Gili Trawangan and has been scuba diving or snorkeling will be able to attest to how many sea turtles are in the area, and this could well be in large part due to the efforts of the Turtle conservation.
