Taman Mini Indonesia Indah is a “theme park” located in East Jakarta. The name literally means “Beautiful Indonesia Mini Park”. The park was originally built back in the early 1970’s by the wife of the Indonesian President, and run by their family ever since. In 2021, however, it was taken over by the Government of Indonesia. Almost immediately the 100 hectare park began renovations. What is emerging now, in late 2021 (time of writing) is a beautiful theme park that is even more popular with locals and visitors than it was before. If that is possible!

What is Taman Mini Indonesia?
Taman Mini Indonesia Indah is a recreational “theme park” that is themed on the different cultures of Indonesia. There are 26 Provinces showcased in the park, with each offering an incredible display depicting the architecture, clothing, dances and traditions of that individual region. For anyone that is interested in getting a glimpse of Indonesia, and an appreciation for how much the cultures differ across the archipelago, then Taman Mini Indonesia is the place!
Aside from the Cultural Displays, the park offers 16 museums, ranging from Transportation to Sports, Oil & Gas or even a Stamp Museum! There is a Bird Park, Reptile Park, and an Aquarium. Taman Mini Indonesia is extremely popular on weekends and holidays, especially with families as it caters to all ages. There are rides for the children, and even a park and water park designed just for them. An Imax Theater caters to all, and every age group can enjoy the Gondola ride across the park, or the paddle boats around the Map Themed Lake.
Things to do at Taman Mini Indonesia
With a park that is so big, there is definitely no shortage of things to do. There is over 100 hectares, after all, and one day is simply not enough to get around to everything. I personally have been on a couple of occasions, and still plan to go back again.
Let’s take a look at some of the things to do:
- Visit the 26 incredible cultural displays – This in itself would take up several days if done right. Each culture in Indonesia is represented, and every one of them is incredible. Walk among the different buildings constructed in the exact style of where they are from. Go inside and step right into that culture as you enter a museum of costumes, artifacts and replicas. Talk to the staff, who are each original natives of that particular culture and can offer insights that only a local could.
- Stroll around some of the many museums – From the incredible military museum housed inside a fort, or the Transportation Museum with a Garuda Plane right out front, you will be amazed at the detail the museums of Taman Mini Indonesia offer!
- Take a Gondola ride – The Gondola travels high above the park, offering a great view of the layout, as well as showcasing many attractions you might have missed from the ground. It also goes right over the lake, allowing a bird’s eye view of the map of Indonesia that is its centerpiece.
- Paddle around the lake – There are paddle boats that you can take out into the lake. Paddle past the islands and around the map as you try to identify each island, and even the volcanoes that are showcased on each of them.
- Check out the miniatures – Yes, Taman Mini Indonesia also has miniatures within the miniature park. There is a miniature Monas, Mini Borobudur, and even a mini train that runs around the park!
- Visit the Theater – There are 3 theaters at Taman Mini Indonesia, including an Imax Theater and a 4D Theater.
- Visit the Aquarium, Reptile Park or Bird Park – All of these house specimen from every region of Indonesia. Some even have species from other countries, such as Australia, China, Africa and South America.
- Inspect the Religious Buildings – Every faith is catered for at Taman Mini Indonesia, with a Mosque, Catholic Church and Buddhist Temple among the 7 fully functioning buildings in the park.
- Wander or relax in the gardens and parks – An orchid Garden, Medicinal Garden and Cactus Garden are only a few of the Gardens that are housed in the park.
As you can see there is almost no end to what you can do in the park. I didn’t even mention the restaurants and warungs available that will cater to almost any taste. No matter how long you decide to spend at Taman Mini Indonesia, you are completely covered!
How to get to Taman Mini Indonesia
The absolute best way to get to Taman Mini Indonesia is by car. This way, you have your car with you inside the park and can drive around.
The other good way and also most direct way is by bus. The bus terminal is right out front of the main gate, and many different lines come to Taman Mini Indonesia from all over Jakarta.
Here is a list of the buses that will get you there:
7D, JAK6, T02, T19
How to get around
Getting around inside Taman Mini Indonesia is simple.
Firstly, you can drive. The entrance fee is for you AND your car, so feel free to drive all the way around, stopping and parking at each display. Be aware though, that most of the roads are one way. Last time we were there we must have driven the loop around the park 24 times!
Other than by car, you can walk around the park. It is a long way, but you will also be stopping all the time. there are great footpaths and walkways with plenty of shade.
Then there is the transport within the park, such as the gondola and mini train. You can utilize these not only to see the park, but move around between different points.
Finally, a really great option for anyone without a car is to hire a pushbike. The entire park is flat, so riding a bike is easy, and a simple way to enjoy everything as quickly or leisurely as you like.
Where to stay
There is accommodation right at the park, and several close by. The closest by far is Hotel Desa Wisata, which is highly rated. Beware that during the high season or holidays it is likely to be booked out far in advance!
