Write for Me

Come and write for me at The Travel Author!

I have good news! I am going to open up this blog to aspiring travel writers who would like to apply to guest post on my website.

Who I am looking for

I’m looking for writers who have a good grasp of the English language, as well as grammar. I don’t want to spend my entire day editing!

This opportunity would be perfect for aspiring Travel Writers who may be:

  • are trying to build their portfolio of travel writing.
  • wish to spread the news about their home town.
  • have been on a trip and are busting to write about it!
  • are thinking of building their own travel website.

This is NOT a paid opportunity. I’m sorry. If you are looking to be paid for writing, then you will have to look elsewhere. Instead, you will receive your very own Bio as an author on my website that will feature next to the article that you write. You will also be able to have one free do-follow backlink to your own website.

I was a struggling Travel Writer once. I didn’t have a portfolio, and no one would accept my writing. No one would even listen to me! In the end, I had to create my own website and build my own portfolio that way. Now, I have had requests to write for other websites, and have even written for Lonely Planet.

I want to help other writers out there that just want to get their work published. If you are a good writer, and I feel you are a good fit for The Travel Author, then come and write for me!

Content I am looking for

Take a good look through my website, and get a feel for the content I post. The Travel Author is all about guides, and giving people an insight into what to do at a location, and every detail they will need to make visiting that location easy. My Guides are in depth, and cover everything anyone will need to know.

The sort of articles I generally like about a location are:

  • # things to do in _____
  • Places to eat in _____
  • # Day Itinerary for _____
  • Complete Guide to _____

Depending upon the location, there are always other articles that can be written. For example, in Istanbul I wrote about the ferries. In Bali, I wrote guides to climbing Volcanoes.

If you have a pitch about something that would be great to write about in your hometown, or somewhere you have been, then put it together and send it to me. I am always interested.

Content Tips

My website is designed to educate people about potential destinations, and show them where they can go, and what they can do there. I go into detail about places, and what they can expect. Along the way I throw in my personal experiences, and try to tell a story.

I pride myself in being able to help my readers. I don’t get promotional, and I don’t try to sell anything. If there is a free way for my readers to see and do something, I will promote that over the expensive tour.

Most of all, I have to have BEEN to the location, and feel that I know enough about it to actually write about it. I don’t believe in blogs that promote a place they have never been to! Plus, even though I have been to, say, Hawaii, it was many years ago, and I couldn’t truthfully write a guide without going back and getting current information.

So before you pitch a place to me, or an article or guide, think to yourself, are you an expert? Do you know enough about the location to write truthfully, and give the information necessary?

Is your view original? I am not interested if there are already 35 other articles on google about it. Find a new angle, or something about the location that no one has already written about. If there are already a few articles about it, and you can find something fresh about it, then by all means, pitch it to me. Just know that I may turn it down, but I will at least listen.

DO YOUR RESEARCH. And I don’t just mean about the destination, because that goes without saying. If you want to be a travel writer though, you have to research keywords, other articles on the topic, and what competition there is. If you pitch me an article that has been covered a million times, I will not even look at it. Do yourself a favor, and shorten the odds of acceptance.

ALL CONTENT MUST BE ORIGINAL. If you are looking to write for me, or anyone, even yourself, and your work is not original, then you are cheating yourself, your readers, and MY readers. Make certain of originality, and I WILL be doing a plagiarism check on all work.

BREAK UP YOUR CONTENT. Use images, bullet points, lists, and headlines to break up your content to make it easier to read. No one likes a mountain of text to wade through. Most readers will likely skim articles, so make the points they are searching for easier to find.

BE CONVERSATIONAL. Most of all, write easily. Write your articles in the same manner you would use if you were explaining it to your friend. Use stories and personal experiences. This will help you to connect to your readers.

POSTS SHOULD BE AT LEAST 1500 WORDS. IT may seem long, but my normal posts are around 2000 words. My guides can be 3000+. If you have a shorter article, but it hits it out of the ballpark for keywords and SEO, then I will always consider it.

SUPPLY IMAGES. You will need to supply some good quality ORIGINAL images for your article.

Locations I am looking for

I am not looking for articles for locations that I have covered extensively myself. For example, I am NOT looking for Bali articles as I have already written nearly 100 of them!

Take a look at my website, and see whether your topic has already been covered. If not, then pitch it to me.

There ARE locations that I am currently looking for articles in. If you are from these places, or can write well informed articles about them from your personal experiences, then you will go a long way toward being accepted to write for me.

Locations I am currently looking for:

  • The USA
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Central America
  • South America
  • Spain
  • Portugal

This list is not exhaustive however. If you are in another location that is not covered in my blog already, let me know.
