Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall – Your Complete Guide

Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall is a relative newcomer as far as waterfalls in Bali are concerned, but it is rapidly rising up the list of favorites for most visitors. And for good reason. This is a waterfall that will transport you into another world and leave you believing that you may have somehow stepped through a hidden portal into a land that was created by an author from another time, with a long set of initials in front of a name such as Tolkien. Or Lewis.

For those that love such things, this waterfall is becoming a mecca. Sitting on the rocks and watching the softly falling water cascading over moss covered rocks will have you thinking that time has ceased, and you truly are alone in a world that is suddenly free of troubles and worries. For the others, they will enjoy a waterfall that is different to anything they have ever seen before, and wonder how such an amazing place could even exist, let alone have stayed secret for so long.

How to get to Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall

Getting to Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall is relatively easy. Located above the Twin Lakes in Bali, it can be found close by to Banyuwala Twin Waterfalls and Wanagiri Waterfall. This also makes it ideal to combine into the perfect day trip. Be warned, however, that Banyu Wana Amertha waterfall will take a couple of hours out of your day, so factor in plenty of time.

If you are coming from the southern region of Bali, head up toward Bedugul and follow the signs toward Singaraja. Once you wind up the hill with the lake on your left, turn hard left as soon as you reach the top. This road will begin to take you along the rim high above the Twin Lakes, and the signs to Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall will appear within only a couple of minutes. Turn right and head all the way down until you reach the Falls on your left.

What to expect at Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall

When you arrive at the ticket office you will get a pleasant surprise. (well, maybe not because we are about to tell you). Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall is not just the one waterfall, but FOUR waterfalls all combined under the one price of admission. That’s right. FOUR!

This is, of course, depending upon the season. We visited in dry season and three of the Falls were raging, while the fourth was just a dribble. Even so, we only expected the one waterfall, so were still over the moon.

Head down the track which is a steep concrete ramp through some beautiful orchards and banana plantations. There are no stairs for the majority of the trip to Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall as they have made it accessible for scooters to get down to a couple of Warungs near the bottom. The upshot of this is that you can hitch a ride back to the top if you like, for the fee of 30k rupe.

After about 15 to 20 minutes walk you will be approaching the bottom of the gorge and reach a sign that will point in two different directions. One direction will be Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall and “One Waterfall”. The other will be Banyu Wana Amertha/Spray Waterfall and “Two Waterfall”. It seems that some of these waterfalls have not actually been given official names as yet, but as they gain in popularity we are certain that will come.

Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall

First, we will talk about the left hand path that takes you to Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall itself. This path is pretty straight forward with a short flight of stairs (by Bali standards) to negotiate. About halfway down the stairs you will catch a glimpse of Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall off to your right. It is not the first waterfall that you reach, however.

Once you get to the bottom of the stairs you will see the waterfall called One Waterfall. This is a single cascade of water that will appear on your left, and accessed via a small bamboo bridge. Take the time to snap some photos, (remember if it is dry season this waterfall may not be flowing), however the main course is to be found only a few meters off to the right.

Banyu Mana Amertha Waterfall is an amazing sight to behold, with hundreds of small waterfalls falling down over moss covered rocks, weaving through vegetation and cascading elegantly into a glorious pool at its base. We cannot say enough about how beautiful this place is, so soak it up and enjoy it while you can. We were able to enjoy this place all alone during Covid-19, so had the best of it and loved every minute!

You will notice that there is a small change room half hidden on the far side of the falls behind some lovely plants and foliage. This is so you can take a swim in the pool that has been designed at the base of the falls when the locals built a couple of small dam walls, turning this already amazing location into the perfect rest stop.

Banyu Wana Amertha/Spray Waterfall

After you have soaked up as much time as you can at Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall, head back up to the junction in the path and take the right hand leg. At this stage you will still be feeling the “wow” factor of Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall, but be prepared to feel it all over again. Spray Waterfall is awaiting not too far down the path.

First, though, you will find a sign off to the right, only a short distance down the hill. Take this path in through the trees and you will find Two Waterfall down a short section of stairs. This waterfall is a twin waterfall and, in any other place, would be a great waterfall in it’s own right. Here though, amongst some of the best waterfalls in the region it sort of pales in comparison. Taking nothing away from the fact the twin Falls here are worth the stop off and a few photos.

Head back out onto the path and continue down the hill again. The stairs you begin to encounter are of the large variety, but fairly new and comfortable to negotiate. At the bottom of the first section you will find a rest stop and another stairway continuing down past it to the right. By now you will be able to hear the sounds of the waterfall, and within a dozen or so stairs it will come fully into view.

Right now you will want to pause and take photos and videos. It is an amazing sight as about 6 waterfalls plummet down the cliff into the pool at the bottom, forming one massive waterfall. Even in dry season these Falls are impressive, and are even more so from their base, so continue down there when you are ready.

At the bottom you will find a large pool and a bridge with a small change room. You will also find out why it is called Spray Waterfall, so be prepared for a bit of a soaking. This waterfall is amazing, and is almost the perfect accompaniment to Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall, as it is almost everything that Banyu Wana is not. Large, powerful and imposing. Take your time and enjoy!
