Langkawi is a tropical island that lies off the northwest coast of Malaysia, very close to the border with Thailand. Being so close to other tourist “island” hotspots, it often gets overlooked in favor of these other, more famous locations. Langkawi holds its own though, with gorgeous, jungle covered islands ringed by sandy white beaches, whilst also boasting less than half the crowds. But with anonymity such as Langkawi has, also comes confusion when booking a holiday. Things such as how to get there, and what are the best hotels in Langkawi?
In this article I am going to tackle that last big question – what are the best hotels in Langkawi? I will also take a look at some of the different areas to stay in Langkawi, and what might be the best for you.

Where to stay in Langkawi
One thing that becomes quite confusing when planning a trip to a relatively unknown place, is where to stay. I’m not talking about hotels, but what area to say in. This happens a lot on islands such as Bali, where moving from one neighborhood to another can provide a totally different experience. This is also the case in Langkawi, and the island is very diverse, meaning that picking the most suitable place to stay for you can make or break your holiday. Importantly, it will also help to narrow down your choices when looking for the best hotels in Langkawi.
So let’s take a quick look at a few of the different areas to stay in Langkawi.
- Pantai Cenang – This is easily the most popular place to stay in Langkawi, and with good reason. Pantai Cenang is a long white strip of sand facing onto beautiful waters, and several large off shore islands providing a beautiful view. Most of the budget accommodation can be found around this area, as well as some more upmarket options in neighboring Pantai Tengah. The largest selections of restaurants and shops line the Pantai Cenang streets, and the main beach is also the center for water sports on the island. Important to note is that this area is also close to the airport, and is one of the choices for those on a short stay.
- Pantai Kok – This is an area of Langkawi that every visitor to the island is likely to find themselves at least once during their stay. The primary reason for this is the Langkawi Cable Car and Skybridge that are located here, and are an unmissable attraction. The beaches themselves are beautiful white sand with protected waters and very few tourists. Locals love getting down here on the weekends, and several large hotels face onto their very own private beaches. Only 15 minutes from the airport, Pantai Kok is a great choice if you want to be handy to everything, close to the airport, but enjoy peace and quiet over the nightlife.
- Tanjung Rhu – Basically, the best beaches on the island. Tanjung Rhu is on the totally opposite side of the island to the airport and the busy Pantai Cenang area, meaning peace and quiet is the name of the game. Things can get busy around the Mangrove Tour jetty areas, but otherwise you will have this part of the island to yourself. Set up on the beautiful beach in a deck chair, drink freshly make juice and while away the day gazing out at nearby tropical islands.
- Kuah – Kuah is basically the capital of Langkawi, and the main entry port for those coming to the island by ferry. It is therefore the best Duty Free shopping area, which you will find around the Jetty itself. There are several attractions around the town such as the Eagle Statue, Dataran Lang , Maha Tower and Legenda Park. Otherwise, there is not too much reason to hang around in Kuah, and the best hotels in Langkawi will be found elsewhere.
- Datai Bay – If you are after luxury and wonderful beaches, then head to Datai Bay. The drive in is through the National Park and takes a while, but once you arrive you will have it to yourself. Exclusive, with whispy white picture perfect beaches, high end luxury and the best Golf Course in Langkawi.
So that’s a quick look at some of the main areas of Langkawi. Let’s now move onto the best hotels in Langkawi!
