North Bali Itinerary – Two Days In A Remote Paradise

So you have seen North Bali on the maps, and maybe even been to Kintamani. Some of you may have even climbed Mount Batur. But have you REALLY seen North Bali? We have, and trust us when we say that this is a part of the island that you don’t want to miss. Therefore, to help you out we have created this North Bali Itinerary.

Now, as far as Itineraries go, overnight does not seem like a very long time. But trust us, this trip will have you seeing a LOT of the area. We did it ourselves only last week (at time of writing), and it was amazing!

As with all of our itineraries they are made for you to self drive, or in this case ride. You will almost definitely want to have a scooter (motor) for this trip due to Bukit Mende having very narrow road access.

We will add a few notes to the end of this article about other options you can take to customize this trip for yourself. For now, sit back, take out a pen and paper and get ready for our North Bali Itinerary!

North Bali Itinerary Day 1

Day 1 of this itinerary will see you starting early. Wake up as early as you can, but getting away by 6am should be the latest. The reason for this is twofold. First, traffic. If you are coming from South Bali, you have about 2.5 hrs ride ahead of you, so you don’t want to add to that by being stopped in traffic all the time. Of course if you are in Ubud, 6am is a perfect time to start.

The second reason is because the first place you are going to be visiting is Bukit Mende in Kintamani. This place has the most amazing views and is one of our favorite places on the island, but if you get there after 9am, you may have to deal with the cloud coming down from Mt Batur.

Bukit Mende

To get to Bukit Mende, head up through Ubud toward the Batur Caldera, or set your Google maps for this place. Once you reach the road about the rim, turn left and head toward Singaraja. Google maps will help you out, but gets a bit confused once you get closer. Have a look at this article to get our directions into Bukit Mende.

Once you leave Bukit Mende set your Google maps for this location. The next part of your North Bali Itinerary will take you down toward Singaraja. Interesting to note is that sections of this road down from the remote mountains is some of the best we have ridden on in Bali!

This is Bukit Teletubbies. That’s right, Teletubbies. The Bukit is actually named that! To add to the fun, there are also two meter tall Teletubby statues at the Bukit to pose for some fun photos with.

Bukit Teletubbies

This place is more than just the statues though. Come during the wet season and the hills are rolling and green, just like in the actual tv show. It is the views that attract most visitors though, and this is one of those places that locals love to come to watch the sunset and just hang out, much like Bukit Asah in Karangasem, or Bukit Kursi in Pemuteran. So take your time, enjoy the views and relax. There are even a few warungs if you are hungry.

Once you leave Teletubbies, set GPS for this location.

This is where we recommend staying the night. Pranajaya Villa is a fantastic, cozy villa tucked away right near the beach in a relatively undiscovered stretch of the north Bali coastline. You can’t go wrong, and it is in a great spot to set you up for the next day. Plus, up to 8 people can stay!

BONUS LOCATION

Depending upon what time you arrive and how keen you are for more, you can emulate what we did and head straight back out to this location.

Les Waterfall was a must for our North Bali Itinerary, because we LOVE waterfalls. This is one of the only waterfalls in this area so we couldn’t just ride past and not stop. It’s only 20 minutes from the villa, so if you have a couple hours left, (and you should if you started early this morning), then check it out!

Day 2

Today we are heading home, but it is up to you how early you will want to get up. It’s about a 2.5 hour ride back, and only one stop on the way. What you may want to think of, though, is that we are going to take you on the scenic route. Right between two volcanoes!

Set your GPS for this location.

We are taking you today to Besakih Temple, one of the most famous temples in Bali, and right on the southern slopes of Mount Agung. The ride is a little under 1.5 hours to get there, but take your time and enjoy the view. As you turn off the coast road and head south, the GPS will take you right between Mount Agung and Mount Abang. Abang is actually the highest point of the Caldera of Mount Batur. Both Agung and Abang give you some great scenery to look at on the ride, and the view of Mount Agung being so close is amazing.

One thing to remember is that this is volcanic mountainous area, and the weather can close in. If it is not the dry season, you may want to have ponchos handy, or start early to beat the rain clouds as they form.

Besakih Temple is one of the nine directional Temples in Bali, and even if you aren’t a “Temple person” you cannot just pass by this place without stopping. Enjoy your time here and decide what you want to do on the trip home. There are a couple of different options.

Besakih Temple

First, if you love flowers, just near Besakih Temple there are some great fields of Marigold and Edelweiss. Certainly worth having a look as they are only a few minutes away at this spot.

If you are heading back to Ubud, make the turn at Semarapura, or follow this GPS. Alternatively if you are going to Kuta, follow this one.

Well, that’s it for our Two day North Bali Itinerary. We are sure you will see some amazing parts of the island that you normally would not see, and go places that you just don’t get to on a tour.

Keep tuned here for another Itinerary for the same road, but over a longer period to encompass several other places along the way. This will break up the long legs on the scooter for those that need a regular stretch.

Also, don’t forget your Travel Insurance, and to check out our other itineraries on this site.
