Tegal Wangi Beach is a little-known beach tucked away just south of Jimbaran Beach on the Bali Bukit. Only a very small beach, it is not that easy to find, yet very popular with the locals. In recent years, it has also become quite famous due to Instagram, and with good reason. Read on to find out why.

Where is Tegal Wangi Beach?
Getting to this beach is rather easy. Well, getting to the carpark is! Head out onto the Bali Bukit and turn toward Jimbaran. When you reach the large roundabout, take the signs toward Ayana Resort. You want to drive almost to the very gates of the resort, where you will turn right and follow that road directly to the cliff and temple above Tegal Wangi Beach. If you are still unsure, this link will take you to the Google maps location.
What to expect?
Once you are at the carpark in the front of the temple, walk left toward the cliff edge. The wall of the property on the left side stops just short of the cliff edge, and from there you will find a track that leads you south along the edge until it drops over the edge and winds the short distance down to the beach.
NB: After the corona virus lockdowns, all accesses to beaches were cut off and blocked by the local Banjars. It is still possible to access the beach, but at time of writing Tegal Wangi is still actually blocked off, however I expect it will be reopened shortly. Beware of trespassing on private land if you do wish to access the beach.
Once you reach the beach you will find a small strip of land and large boulders of volcanic rock. It’s a great place for photos, and very popular with Pre-Wedding photographers and sunset seekers. At one end of the beach, you will find a cave tucked away that is very Instagrammable. This is the perfect spot to relax out of the sun, if you can get it to yourself. It is only about five metres deep, but is quite quirky and fun.
If you visit the beach on the lower end of the tide there are natural pools or “jacuzzies” to chill out in as well. They are located at the opposite end of the beach from the cave, and can look amazing in photos taken around sunset. Did I mention that this is one of the best beaches in Bali for sunsets?
Tegal Wangi Beach is not the largest beach, but has several features that you will not find on every other beach on the Bukit. It is certainly worth checking out, even if just for those amazing sunsets!
Where to stay for Tegal Wangi Beach

How to get around in Bali
The very best way to get around in Bali is by scooter. I recommend this to everyone that visits the island. Why? Because Bali, and Indonesia as a whole, was basically made for scooters. Everywhere you go, roads are designed with narrow access, sometimes SO narrow that a car will not fit down them. Even rice paddies are designed for scooter access to assist the workers. Which is great for those of us that want some amazing photos, and can ride right out into the middle of the fields!
To hire a scooter in Bali is easy. Just have a look at THIS LINK for a trusted and reliable option. All you need is your local license from back home, plus an international driver’s permit that you can get before you come to Bali. Bring it with you and you are all set. Also, as goes without saying, don’t forget your travel insurance! Just make certain to check what you are covered for first.
If you are not confident of riding a scooter in Bali, the the other option is to get a car and a driver. This option is fine for Tegal Wangi Beach, as the access is fine for a car all the way to the carpark. Just check out THIS LINK for a trusted option.
Summary
Tegal Wangi Beach is a real hidden gem located right in plain sight in Southern Bali. It is not easy to get down to, but simple to find. It is worth the time to check it out, however before you go, check out the tides and also the time of day. Sunset is the best!
