5 Best Mount Agung Viewpoints in Bali

There is no doubt that Mount Agung is one of the most dominant features on the island of Bali. Therefore, it makes sense that it is also one of the most photographed. In East Bali in particular, tourists are forever seeking out the best vantage points for those perfect Instagram shots. So, today I have decided to put together a list of my favorite Mount Agung Viewpoints for you.

Some of these Mount Agung Viewpoints are quite well known, especially to Instagrammers. Others, I have had to seek out and find myself through trial and error. There has also been a lot of intense studying of Google maps. Therefore I have included precise Google Maps locations for each of them in order to make it easier for you.

Mount Agung Viewpoint #1 – Bukit Cinta

Bukit Cinta

Bukit Cinta is really easy to find. It is the closest of these points to the center at Amlapura, and is right beside the road. Essentially, it is just a large field of grass on a slight rise overlooking rice paddies below. The drawcard is, of course, that there is a completely unobstructed view of Mount Agung in the distance. The best time of day for photos at Bukit Cinta is in the morning, with the morning suns rays spreading across the rice paddies and falling squarely on the mountain.

Viewpoint #2 – Lempuyang Temple

Lempuyang Temple
Lempuyang Temple

Lempuyang Temple, or Heaven’s Gate as it is better well known, is probably the most popular and well known place on this list. The temple is one of the nine directional temples of Bali, and tourists flock to it in droves in normal travel times. One of the main reasons is the amazing photos that can be taken of the gates with Mount Agung in the background. Definitely not to be missed if you are in the East Bali area.

Mount Agung Viewpoint #3 – Kubu

Kubu Karangasem
Kubu, Karangasem

This is one that was harder to find. Kubu actually has many places where you can see the mountain from a totally different angle. So Mount Agung Viewpoints are not that hard to find. Finding the right ones are, though. The one I have included in the photo above is a great spot with a grassy field beside the road. I took several photos here, and if you are patient one of the local goatherders might happen by with his herd for an even more interesting and rare foreground. Another similar place I have found is simply called “Savanah” and features goats, horses and cows. I will include both links below.

Viewpoint #4 – Karangasem

Karangasem

This Mount Agung Viewpoint at Karangasem is one that I had to seek out after I saw a few similar photos on Instagram. As it turns out it isn’t too far off the road to Heaven’s Gate. It features some wonderful Rice Paddies that act as a beautiful foreground to Mount Agung that seems so close. I have visited this spot a couple of times, and the morning is definitely the best with the sun falling directly on the mountain.

Mount Agung Viewpoint #5 – Lahangan Sweet

Lahangan Sweet

I have saved my favorite and what I think is the best Mount Agung Viewpoint for last. Lahangan Sweet is not easy to get to, but it is worth it! A viewpoint on top of the hills way above Lempuyang Temple, this place has to be seen to be believed. Not only can you see Mount Agung, but you have sweeping views all the way to Lombok. Lahangan Sweet also features a lot of viewing platforms especially designed to create the perfect photos. Make certain to check out the article here for more information about getting to Lahangan Sweet.

Wondering how to get around in Bali?

My suggestion is by Scooter. You can get anywhere on the island on a scooter, and you can easily hire one at this link. If you have an international driver’s permit, then you are set to go! Your other option is to hire a car and a driver. You can get one right here, and organize your day out in air-conditioned comfort! Either way, you will enjoy your day and get to see a bit of this wonderful island. As always, make sure that you have your Travel Insurance up to date as well.

Where to stay in East Bali

There are many places to stay in East Bali. The Karangasem area is full of great home stays and villa accommodation. Since I have been to the area a lot and traveled rather extensively, I have found that booking through Booking.com gives me the widest range of options. Below, I will put a couple of links that I always use when searching for somewhere to stay. Just decide what you are planning to do and pick somewhere central. I would suggest the Amlapura area. Close to the beach is usually nice and quite, especially around Jasri Beach.

Happy hunting!

Karangasem region which covers most of East Bali.

Amed for those wanted to stay in the North. Popular area for expats and Divers.

Jasri, for those that want to stay by the beach, but closer to Tirta Gangga and the Amlapura area.
