Along with several other waterfalls in North Bali, Banyumala Twin Waterfalls had been on our list of “must visits” for a long time. Finally, we planned a whole week in the Munduk region so that we could tick all of them off our list. Now we are so glad that we did. Banyumala Twin Waterfalls were all that we expected and more!
We have now seen around 40 waterfalls in Bali, and what we are continuing to find is that every single one of them is unique in it’s own way. Banyumala Twin Waterfalls certainly fits into this category, with a wow factor that in itself provides enough incentive to visit.

Where are Banyumala Twin Waterfalls?
Finding Banyumala Twin Waterfalls is rather easy. In fact, if you have ever driven along the road above the Twin Lakes of North Bali, then you have probably already seen the signs. As with most of the other popular, and some not so popular waterfalls in Bali, there are plenty of large green signs adorned with pictures of the Falls as you approach the turnoff. In the case of this waterfall, the turn is about halfway along the road directly above the lakes.
From any of the southern regions of Bali, including Ubud, just set your course for Bedugul in Central Bali. From there, follow the signs toward Singaraja. Once you pass by the lake, head up the hill on the other side (the one with monkeys everywhere!) until you reach the top. There, take a sharp turn to the left and follow that road along the rim of the lakes until you find the signs for Banyumala Twin Waterfalls. Be aware though, that coming from this direction you will first pass turnoffs to Banyuwana Amertha Waterfall and also Wanagiri Waterfall. Both are also worth the visit!
Whilst you are driving along the rim of the Twin Lakes, make certain to visit a local Warung or two. There is some fantastic local food to try, and while we have been hunting waterfalls in the region there are not many of these warungs that we have not tried.
Banyumala Twin Waterfalls Access
Once you reach Banyumala Twin Waterfalls you will find a carpark beside a zip line and adventure business. If you are driving, you have to park here and begin the walk. If on a scooter you can opt to continue riding all the way to the ticket office. We were driving so had no choice but to do the walk. In the end we were glad we did as the walk has beautiful fields of flowers and is a rather nice little hike. Also interesting to note is that the zip line finished halfway along the walk, so if you are that way inclined, why not give it a go?
Once you reach the ticket office the fee is 30k rupiah per person. Once you have paid and signed the book, head down the stairs toward the falls. From the outset you can hear the sounds of the rushing water from below which is always a great sign as you know the trek isn’t going to be a long one. As such, the stairs only last for about 10 – 15 minutes. They are of good quality and safe, however some can be quite large and tiring to negotiate for shorter people, with one part of the path becoming wet and slippery as water falls down the slope from above. Be careful and remember this is Bali and these things are all part of being on a tropical island.
What To Expect
Long before you arrive at the foot of Banyumala Twin Waterfalls you will hear the sounds of rushing water. Even though this is, in fact, the sound of waterfalls, it isn’t the Twin Waterfalls you are hearing. More on that later…
The stairs and the path end at the foot of Banyumala Twin Waterfalls. Your first glimpse through the trees will give you an idea what to expect, and if you have ever seen photos on Instagram of this place your breath will catch in your throat. This is the reason you came here, and now you will realize that you are about to witness their extraordinary beauty for yourself.
As you walk into the small clearing at the end of the path, take a moment to gaze in wonder at the Falls. Every newcomer does, after all. You will be tempted to whip out the camera and begin taking photos, which you should. Off to your right, however, you will see a red bridge that is sort of like a small, redder, Bali version of the Golden Gate Bridge. Cross over the bridge and you will find the photos to be a better angle from that side. You will also find a set of change rooms and toilets over there.
UPDATE JANUARY 2024 – There is now another, new bridge beside the red bridge. This is the newer of the two but doesn’t look like it, as it is simply made of Bamboo. The reason? I’m not certain, but it makes great photos if you stand on the red bridge to get a photo of someone on the bamboo bridge in front of the waterfall!
Banyumala Twin Waterfalls is actually a bit of a misnomer, as you will see once you take the time to study them closer. Sure, they are named for the main two Falls that cascade down the face of the cliff. These Falls, however, consist of maybe a hundred small falls that spread across the cliff, many of them hidden by the plant life that flourishes along the face. All of them fall or flow into the large pool at the base of the Falls where you can safely swim and enjoy a cool and refreshing break before your trek back up again.
Camping At Banyumala Twin Waterfalls
Yes, that’s right. You can actually camp at the waterfalls. Surprisingly this is not uncommon in Bali, even though you may not have heard much about it. We first found camping sites at Golden Valley Waterfall in Munduk, and have since realized that you can camp at others as well. You just have to enquire.
At Banyumala Twin Waterfalls camping comes with the cost of the entry fee. So long as you have your tent and equipment with you, feel free to pitch your tent and stay overnight! There are spaces on nice flat areas for several tents with fantastic views of the Falls and the surrounds. Beware, though, that the camping sites are not exactly hidden and during the day you will have visitors and tourists always within site of your camp.
Hidden Waterfalls Nearby
Just past the campsite you will see a small track winding past a few banana trees, appearing to head down the gorge further. With a keen eye while standing on the bridge you might see the remains of an old bamboo bridge down that way as well. We were curious, and as we tend to do, we investigated.
What we found was another waterfall cascading down in a few small series from the cliff that the staircase actually comes down. This was the sounds of water that we could hear on the stairs earlier. Once you are behind the campsite, have a look around and you will find a small track seeming to head off down the gorge. This track actually drops straight into the gorge where you will immediately find three or four other small waterfalls all flowing into the gorge. If you are camping, these are completely hidden from the tourists at the main waterfall and are perfect for a quick shower!
UPDATE JANUARY 2024 – The waterfalls behind the camping area have now been completely cleared away, and the pool at the base cleared of weed and undergrowth, there is now a beautiful spot for swimming, and the falls themselves rival the main waterfall.

Where To Stay For Banyumala Twin Waterfalls
If you are visiting Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, it is certainly a great option to stay in the region. There are just so many waterfalls to choose from that you will always wish you stayed longer. This is probably the most waterfall rich region on the island, after all, containing maybe even more waterfalls than Ubud!
When we are in Munduk we always stay at Adila Homestay. They are our favorite homestay on the island with amazing views and great hospitality.
