There is a hidden sunset spot in Uluwatu that still manages to fly under the tourist radar. For that reason, it is a haven for locals who wish to escape the clifftop crowds of sunset, and enjoy some peace and quiet. Although it is only a stone’s throw from some of the major Uluwatu tourist attractions, it is still rare for anyone other than a local to found there. This is Jaran Hill, hidden Uluwatu sunset spot.

Where is Jaran Hill?
Jaran Hill is so close to places such as Uluwatu Temple that you have probably been passing the turnoff every day without even noticing it. From Uluwatu Temple, head toward Padang Padang, and the turnoff to Jaran Hill can be found just before the turnoff to Sunset Point Uluwatu. For exact directions, click here for Google maps.
The road in is paved, much like the road into Karang Boma Cliff. This one is a lot narrower, though, and a lot less travelled. Toward the end you will reach a 90 degree turn right, or a sandy track straight ahead. Take the track until it reaches a tall white lighthouse where you can park and take the short 5-minute stroll to the clifftops.
Back at the right-hand turn, if you follow it you will pass a large wall on your left. At the end of it the road turns right again, or you can take the dirt/rocky road to the left. If you go this way you will reach another cliff top with amazing views as well.

What to expect at Jaran Hill
Back at the lighthouse, take the path directly ahead and it will lead to another paved footpath. This one will take you down to the Jaran Hill sunset spot on the cliff tops below. Here, you will find a small warung that sells drinks, and a grassy area to sit and enjoy the sunset.
The views from this spot are amazing. In one direction you can see Uluwatu temple only a stones throw away, and in the other is a long line of tall and imposing cliffs. Far below, the lines of swell roll in and crash against the bottoms of the cliffs. Then, directly ahead is the setting sun, dropping to an uninterrupted horizon.
The cliff edge near the warung has a rudimentary fence erected for safety. This only goes halfway along the cliff, however, and further along there is nothing. While this is fantastic for a photo, be careful if you venture close to the edge. It is a long way down as the drop is huge. If you have vertigo, then give it a miss!
Jaran Hill is definitely a hidden gem in Uluwatu. How a place with sunsets this amazing can exist so close to the tourist crowd and still fly under the radar is strange. So if you want a sunset with some peace and quiet, then set your gps for this place, because chances are, you will find it here. And don’t forget to check out the other cliffs back at the turnoff. There is even less crowd there!
