The Incredible Diversity
If there is one thing that can be said about Bali, it is that no matter where you go, nothing is the same. From the deep jungles of the tropic mountains, to the strips of white sandy beaches, this is a place that can deliver something for everyone. Even in the far north, there is Savannah, below the slopes of Mount Agung where the goats, horses and cows graze peacefully. In the west, the Island enjoys a dryer climate to the mountainous East. Take a trip out to the Bukit in Southern Bali, or the nearby Nusa Islands and witness towering cliffs that fall directly into the ocean, or end on strips of sand so clean and enticing that it is easy to forget about that climb back to the top.
Then, there are the mountains. The inner sanctum of Bali where reside literally hundreds of waterfalls of all shapes and sizes. Lakes, volcanoes, and views that just go on forever. Bali is truly a land of contrasts, and if you are searching for reasons to visit Bali, then search no further.
The Beautiful Beaches
Most visitors to Bali will be well aware of the famous Kuta Beach. Others will be able to tell you about the great surfing beaches of Uluwatu, or the seafood restaurants along Jimbaran Beach. But did you know that Bali is littered with thousands of other beautiful beaches?
Head out to the southern Bukit, and you will quickly realize that Uluwatu is just the beginning of the amazing white sand beaches located there. Nyang Nyang Beach and Nunggalan Beach stretch literally for miles, and the latter even features a shipwreck. Green Bowl beach is a miniature treasure, and stretches such as Bingin and Balangan have been favorites of visitors and surfers for years.
Up north you will arrive at the volcanic black sand beaches, with the white sand Virgin Beach providing a change of scenery. Along the north shore are the rocky and palm tree lined beaches with crystal clear water and world class scuba diving.
Further afield, the Nusa Islands boast maybe the best beaches in Bali. Just be ready to negotiate hundreds of stairs to reach them!
Amazing Waterfalls
One of the travesties of Bali is that so many visitors to its shores never go beyond the southern region and explore the rest of what the island has to offer. From your resort or villa, it isn’t a very long car ride to reach the world class waterfalls that Bali has to offer. Within an hours drive of the main tourist area, there are no less than 30 waterfalls just waiting for you to visit.
Even in the dry season, these Falls are incredible. Tegenungan is probably the most famous, but also the most crowded on any given day due to its easy to reach location. Head instead to the amazing Leke Leke Waterfall, or further afield to feel the power of NungNung, or the Sekumpul Waterfall “Valley”. If you are up for some cliff jumping and swimming, you can’t go wrong with GitGit Waterfall or the Aling Aling Waterfalls.
Closer to home, around the Ubud area there are dozens of offerings in Sumampan Waterfall, Kanto Lampo or Tukad Cepung. I could literally sit here and keep naming them all day! The amazing waterfalls are one of my favorite reasons to visit Bali.
Volcanoes
This section only needs the one world. Volcanoes. That just about says it all.
Presiding above the island is Mount Agung. This is the centerpiece for the entire island, and in a way, for the entire Balinese way of life. Mount Agung is the most holy place on the island, and it is fitting that it can be seen from mostly anywhere in the East or South. Due to recent volcanic activity it has been closed for hiking for the past couple of years, but is slowly opening back up again. When it does, the hikers and trekkers will be lacing up the boots once again. This is a trek that is tough, but is a bucket list item for many.
For others, Mount Batur is a good enough challenge. Residing just to the west of Mount Agung, Batur is impressive enough to attract hundreds of hikers every day. The majority of them show up in the early hours of the morning, and time their climb to the summit in order to catch the amazing dawn that Mount Batur provides. This trek is pretty much suitable for anyone, and is something that every Bali visitor should try at least once.
Bali’s Amazing Temples
Bali is a very cultural and religious island. This is something that is immediately apparent to any visitor from the moment that they step off the plane. Small temples and shrines are located literally everywhere, and become not so much a regular sight, as they are symbols of the very fabric that makes Bali what it is. If you are looking for culture and religion that is woven into everyday life, then the Balinese Temples have to be one of the best reasons to visit Bali.
Go beyond the local, though, and you will find some of the most amazing temples on Earth. At Uluwatu, visit the famous temple on the cliffs, home to the most mischievous troupe of monkeys that you will ever encounter! Head a little West along the Southern coast and find Tanah Lot, the incredible Temple perched upon a rocky island that is constantly pounded by the surf.
On the Southern slopes of Mount Batur there is Besakih Temple, the mother temple of all of Bali. This is the oldest and holiest of all Temples in Bali, and is an absolutely incredible place to visit. Slightly further afield is Lempuyang Temple, better known to many as Heaven’s Gate with its iconic views of Mount Agung.
Next time you are in Bali, or if you are a first time visitor, take a tour and make sure you stop off at a Temple along the way. There are plenty to choose from!
Get the Holiday that you want!
If there is one thing that can be said about Bali, its that you can choose to holiday in whatever style you want.
After a Dive Resort? You got it! Surf Camp? Sure!
More interested in a five star resort with private beach club? Why not? There are dozens!
Villa in the jungle? We have plenty!
You can tailor make your holiday to any intention, past time or love. Romantic hideaways in treetops, to resorts perched on cliffs with infinity pools and views for miles. Bali has everything!
The Beautiful People
It may sound a little cliché, and you probably hear it about many places that you would like to holiday. But the fact is that the Balinese people are simply beautiful. In your resorts, at the beach, in your favorite restaurant. Seeing that huge Balinese smile just never gets old.
If there is something that I really believe in, though, it is getting out and away from the well trodden tourist road, and getting up close and personal with the locals. There are places in Bali, and I have found a lot of them, that they still speak local Balinese and cannot even understand Indonesian. My Indonesian Girlfriend travels with me all the time, and there are places that SHE has troubles communicating.
What they DO understand, is good old fashioned hospitality. Some of them have never seen an outsider before, but they will still offer you a meal, and use of their meagre facilities. They will invite you in and treat you like one of the family. If you ask for directions, they will go so far as drawing a map in the dirt to try and help you out.
I have come across children who, for no reason whatsoever other than being friendly, will not let you pass until they have sung you a song and asked you a million questions about where you are from. These are people that have not been ruined by modern day society, and still live life the way that it should be lived.
With a smile.
Enough reasons to visit Bali?
So that’s my list of reasons to visit Bali. I could go on all day, because there is so much more. I haven’t even mentioned the sunrises or sunsets, the incredible Nusa Islands or the rice paddies that seem to be absolutely everywhere!
In the middle of the island there are incredible lakes and temples that seem to float. Visit the coffee plantations of Munduk and witness views that go on for days.
If you are still not convinced, then have a read through some of my articles on this website. I am certain you will find many reasons to visit Bali, and at least one of them will be the reason that you change your mind.
I’m certain of it!
