Bukit Tengah is not very hard to find, but like many bukits in Bali, you have to work a little to get there. Not that this place is hidden. In fact, it is rather easy to locate and get to following Google Maps. Just be prepared to bump and grind your way up the last couple of hills on your scooter, or have access to a sturdy car or 4wd.

Where is Bukit Tengah?
Bukit Tengah is on the East Coast of Bali. Head up the road toward Candi Dasa until you see Bukit Belong slide by on your left. The road will find its way back to the coastline, and once you reach Pantai Goa Lawah you will see the sign to Bukit Tengah. Keep your eyes open, though, because the sign is very small, about eye level on the left side of the road.

How to Get to Bukit Tengah
The best way to get to Bukit Tengah would be by scooter. I always suggest scooter for getting around in Bali, and it is very easy to hire one. Just head on over to this link for a trusted and reliable scooter delivered right to your door. All you need is an International Driver’s Permit and you are ready to go.
Alternatively, you can hire a car and driver for the day. It is easy to get one at this link, and might be the best option if you are not confident to ride a scooter. There are several benefits to getting a car. These include:

- Pick up and drop off at your resort
Finding Bukit Tengah is not hard, but the final 750m of road is dodgy, to say the least. Once you wind your way up the hill from the beach, (and the views just on this road are amazing) you will come to a point where the map will point you up a dirt road to the right. Straight away you will notice that it is going to be hard going, and much like the access to Lahangan Sweet, it will be tough on the scooter.
Even so, the road is definitely passable and is wide enough for a car, unlike many bush tracks that might pass for roads in remote areas of Bali. The main issue with this road is that it is rocky, and gave me the impression in parts that someone had just dumped a truck load of rocks, spread them out and left them there!
Once you arrive, it is worth it, as the views are amazing!
What to expect
Once you arrive at Bukit Tengah, the hardest part is deciding which way to look. The views are 360 degrees, with Nusa Penida looking so close and even Lombok visible in the distance. Below you is the coastline that stretches all the way to Nusa Dua, and GWK can be seen standing on the Bukit. In the other direction is the hills around Candi Dasa, stretching off into the distance of east Bali. Behind you, over the hill Mount Agung can be seen poking his head up on a clear day.
On the very peak of the Bukit is an old cabin of sorts, falling down and missing some wall panels and flooring. It wouldn’t provide much shelter anymore, but makes a nice prop in your photos. The area all around, and on several flat spots a little down the hill can be utilized for camping, and the remains of a few fire pits hint at the fact that the locals do just that. And why not? This place would be right up there with Bukit Asah and Lahangan Sweet as the ideal place to pitch a tent.
Enjoy your day at Bukit Tengah, and take your time soaking in the views. When you leave, remember to take your rubbish with you, and don’t worry, because the trip back out is a lot easier than coming in.
