Your Guide To The Nusa Lembongan Cliff Hike

For a small island that lies just off the East coast of Bali, Nusa Lembongan holds more secrets than it is possibly entitled to. Most visitors have heard about the famous Yellow Bridge, Devils Tears and Dream Beach, however very rarely would any discussion about the island ever mention any sort of Nusa Lembongan hike. More a scenic walk than a hike, the Nusa Lembongan Cliff Hike would surely be rated one of the most scenic in the world, and certainly not to be missed!

Getting to Nusa Lembongan is easy. Catch a fast boat from Sanur, and in the relative blink of an idea you will find yourself on the white sand of JungutBatu Beach. Make your way to Dream Beach either by tour or privately, and the trailhead awaits.

Dream Beach

The hike starts at Dream Beach. This is a very popular tourist attraction on Lembongan, and if you happen to arrive anytime between mid morning and mid afternoon, you probably had to fight for space on the road with the day tour groups. For this reason it is best to come early if you want the beach to yourself.

Dream Beach is a beautiful location with pearly white, soft sand and water that is about as inviting as it comes. Set on a picture perfect tropical background, it really is what dreams are made of. With an infinity pool and beach club, kick back and relax before you start your trek.

Devils Tears

From Dream Beach, climb up the small rise at the western end of the beach and head across the flat plateau. Follow the path, (if there are no tourists to follow), toward the Devils Tears. If the swell is decent you will not be able to miss it as the waves crash into an underground cavern, and then get discharged in a magnificent cloud of mist and spray that hangs suspended in the air. Take a moment to enjoy it while you attempt to catch a photo of the fantastic rainbow that also appears on occasion.

From this spot, keep moving slightly west to the next point where the cliff juts out into the ocean. Here, hidden behind the bushes at the cliffs edge, you will find the cliff steps down, neatly concealing half a dozen beautiful pools of sea water. If the swell is large then keep your distance and be sure to stay safe, but if not then enjoy the natural pools as you like. Just keep one eye on the ocean. She can be fickle!

Sandy Bay Beach

From the pools the track will keep heading west, following the cliffs edge. Almost from the pools themselves you should be able to see into the next cove. This is Sandy Bay, home to another inviting Beach Club. Stop and relax if you like, otherwise the track continues on the other side of the beach. Climb up the hill and back to the cliffs edge. Follow it along the cliff for a kilometre of so and enjoy the world class view across the ocean toward Bali. Eventually the track will drop down into Mushroom Bay where you can once again relax and have a well earned drink.

This hike will not get the blood pumping, but is one of the most spectacular I have every done. Take your time and it can take up to a few hours to complete as it is only about 2.5 km long.

Insiders Tip: Do this hike in the late afternoon. The sunset can be spectacular, and you will miss the crowds of daytrippers.

Another Insiders Tip: Stay at Nusa Lembongan. There are so many beautiful places you can book, and for a fraction of the price compared to Bali. Take your time and see what the island has to offer, as well as Nusa Ciningan which in my opinion is even better than Lembongan!
